Confidentiality
Clients who see me for therapy are assured that the information shared with me remains strictly confidential. I
do not discuss what you have shared with me with anyone else.
There are exceptions to this, usually involving situations where a client requests it. The exceptions are:
I am legally required to tell the Ministry of Children and Families if I learn of a child being abused. I am legally required to warn anyone whose life is in danger. If you tell me that you are in a safety-sensitive job (such as piloting a commercial ferry to Nanaimo) and are using drugs while at your work post, I am required to contact proper authorities. I am legally required to comply with a subpoena to appear in court or to provide my notes to the court.
If you ask me to send information to anyone else, such as your physician, I will ask for your signed release to do so. If you were referred to me by your physician, I will ask to be able to send a note indicating that you are working with me. Any information I send will be available for you to see.
If I am working with members of a couple or working with family members together, issues of confidentiality can be complex and are discussed with everyone when we first meet.
I may consult with another professional about our work together, but in this case your name and other identifying information would not be used.
If you have any questions about confidentiality, you may ask me about this at any time.
